Back to blog...

If you read our summer newsletter you’ll know just how beneficial TikTok can be for the promotion of your brand. This time we will explain how to get started on this fascinating platform full of short-form video.

Haven’t secured your account name yet? All you have to do is follow the signup process just like any other social media account. (Don’t forget to make it a business account).

Once you’re registered, it’s time to learn your way around. We’ve put together a few tips and tricks to get you started.

1: Creating content

Let's begin with the basics of creating a video, any video. When you open the TikTok app you’ll notice the + at the bottom of your screen, tapping that will open up your camera and you can start your TikTok creation!

To use a premade video click the ‘upload’ icon in the bottom right corner, this will open your device media files and allow you to select your desired video.

To create your video within the app you’ll need to set a time limit. You can choose between 15 seconds, 60 seconds and 3 minutes. If you’re not sure how long your video will be, select the 3-minute option so you don’t run out of time while recording.

You are now free to record your video, just tap the big red button!

2: Editing your video

When you’re happy with your video, you will be able to add captions to convey your message or add extra information. You’ll find this feature on the right of your screen.

Once you’ve become a little more familiar with the app, you will want to start adding filters and effects to your videos. You can find the effects in the bottom left corner of the recording screen and the filters are in the editing tools to the right.

Now it’s time to move on to your post description and settings. The description is where you should add any hashtags. You should make sure comments, duets and stitches are turned on for your content to ensure maximum engagement.

3: Sounds to use

Adding music to your TikTok is a must! Not only will it help to make a connection between your content and the viewer, but using popular sounds will increase your reach.

To find trending sounds you should spend time scrolling the for-you page. You can save a sound straight from someone else's video! Just click the sound title at the bottom of the screen. You will see the number of videos already using it and can add it to your favourites to use later.

You can also access TikTok’s range of brand-friendly music and sounds at the top of the recording screen. As you are using a business account, you will only be shown sounds that are licensed for commercial use. Find your preferred sound by accessing the various playlists, we recommend the ‘TikTok viral’ for popular sounds.

4: Start your following

The usual rules of interacting with your audience to build your following still apply on TikTok. However, there are other steps you can take to boost your following at the start.

Connecting your Instagram to your new account is a great first step. To do this go to your profile and tap ‘edit profile'. This will bring up your profile settings along with the option to link your Instagram account. Click to link. You can then direct your new viewers to your Instagram account where you may have more content.

Trending #hashtags are a great way to get your account noticed. Just start with a ‘#’ in the description and you’ll be presented with popular hashtags. It will even show you how many videos are using each tag.
